user centered design.

For the final assignment of User Centred Design, a poster in A2 format had to be delivered, this poster had to show what my recommendation is for the new coffee machines at the HVA. I have worked towards this moment during the course and the poster shows what the insights from the research are and the end product.

Important during process:

  • Try to use research methods in order to get insights

  • Find a way to keep all gathered information

  • Translate all insights in an realistic redesign

The assignment was to develop a coffee machine that would be used by the students in the buildings of HVA Amstel Campus, the problem is that there are coffee machines in the buildings that are not being used. It was up to me to investigate why people do not use the machines and then to make a recommendation for a new product that has been compiled on the basis of insights from the target audience.

I liked this assignment because I was fairly free in terms of the design of the new product. The first step was to conduct research, which resulted in insights that were then used to put together in a persona. The insights I had gathered during the course were the building blocks for the end product, I tried to implement the wishes of the target audience.

Observations, interviews, mapping, user requirements list, morphological maps and more methods were key to gain insights. These insights were important for the design process, together with my own creativity and inspiration from coffee machines I seen on the internet the redesign was born.

If the machine would look more appealing it would catch my attention...
— Student

The poster is basically a summary of all the work, the persona is partly visual, the requirements list, mist important insights from affinity mapping, the keypath and a redesign of the actual machine. In short students wanted to see machine that is easy to operate in therms of payment and duration as in going through the entire journey of getting a hot drink from the machine. Good quality coffee is highly appreciated, nobody wants to spend money and get low quality coffee in return and of course students that attend a study about design are sensitive for things that look attractive for the eye. The machine at school was as big as a soda machine, which seemed lame to the students, it’s too big, rectangle shaped, dark. It wasn’t a machine that looks inviting and this was a big reason why student don’t make use of it.

The design of the machine comes from the insights but I also got inspired by machines on the internet, at the time a bit of retro was appreciated, it also has the shape of an old fashioned jukebox. This is because fashion student need to be creative and music can bring up a lot of creativity, note that the machine don’t include music but it’s just for the feeling.
